When I started my first job after graduating college, my boss introduced me to the Franklin Covey Planner System. I fell in love immediately. Every morning, I would sit at my desk with my leather binder and beautiful planner pages and organize the day’s task into a prioritized to-do list. This system was my key to juggling all the different aspects of my life. At the time I was working 40 hours a week, volunteering at least another 20 and preparing to compete in the Miss Maryland America Pageant.
When I left the workforce to become a full-time stay-at-home mom, I found that this system didn’t seem to work for me any longer. My days were more open ended and the importance of tasks was much less clear cut. I would make all of these grand plans every morning only to make it to the end of the day without a single task completed.
When I did work on my to-do list, I found that I focused more on the urgent than the important. I finally realized that I had a huge problem and needed a new system when I began to allow the list to dictate how I spent my day at the expense of my children.
A few months ago, I stumble upon the Power of Moms website and their Mind Management for Moms (M.O.M) e-course. When I realized that April, the creator M.O.M. was another Franklin Covey Planner girl, I knew I had to check this program out.
Over the years I had also heard of the Getting Things Done system by David Allen. I even checked his book out of the library, but felt that the system was geared more towards working professionals. Well, April has taken that same system and customized it for mothers.
This is a program that will help the stay-at-home mom, work-at-home mom and everyone in between focus on getting the things that matter most done in life. I absolutely loved going through this two week course. I found the information extremely user friendly and I loved watching April’s videos and listening to her encouraging podcasts. I felt like I had a trusted friend holding my hand and personally walking me through this process.
I wish I had taken a picture of this box before I went through all of the papers. It was filled to the brim! I just have some of the kid’s artwork left to sort.
All of those papers are now neatly organized in my command center. One thing I love about this system is that even though the papers are out of sight, they are all referenced in either my calendar or to-do lists. No more putting something in a file folder in the drawer and completely forgetting it exists!
Since completing the program, I have such a greater handle on all the areas of my life. As a homeschooling mother to four little girls, including an eight month old daughter, life can get hectic to say the least. Before implementing M.O.M. I would always feel like I was forgetting something. I could never fully focus on those around me because part of my brain was always making a mental tally of all that I needed to remember to do.
Now, I can focus on my children, friends and family because I know that I have a system in place and nothing is going to fall through the cracks. I no longer feel like I am just surviving. I am moving forward on tasks and projects that I have been putting off for years––including some exciting changes at this site (more on that later).
